Why Garage Door Springs Fail
Garage door springs are rated for a set number of open-close cycles, usually somewhere around 10,000, after which the metal fatigues and the spring is more likely to snap regardless of how well it was maintained. A door used several times a day works through that cycle count faster than one used once a week, so a spring’s real lifespan depends more on how often the door runs than on the calendar alone.

Can a garage door spring be repaired instead of replaced? +
No. A spring that has snapped or is visibly stretched cannot be safely repaired; the metal has failed and needs a full replacement rated to your door’s weight. Attempting to re-tension or patch a compromised spring risks a sudden failure under load.
Can you replace just one spring, or do both need to change? +
On a torsion system with a single center-mounted spring, only that spring needs replacing. On a two-spring torsion setup or an extension spring system, we recommend replacing both sides together, since the surviving spring is usually close behind the failed one in cycle life and mismatched tension throws off the door’s balance.
Is it worth fixing a garage door spring, or should I replace the whole door? +
